In the early 20th century, the old Dodge Main plant there built cars for the competition. In the 1980s, a new factory on the same land became the home of Cadillac production.
Today, General Motors (NYSE:GM) says its Hamtramck plant will be the home of the next-generation Chevrolet Impala full-size sedan.
The plant, surrounded by the city of Detroit but within the city of Hamtramck, had most recently been the production home of the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne. Last year, GM began building the Chevy Volt at the facility, helped along with generous tax breaks designed to spur development and production of fuel-efficient vehicles.
Earlier this year, GM confirmed it would also build its new mid-size 2013 Malibu in Hamtramck.
With the switch from the Impala's current home in Oshawa, Ontario, the Hamtramck plant will be almost completely devoted to Chevrolet production. The Opel Ampera, Europe's version of the Volt, will account for the small percentage of non-Chevrolet cars assembled at the Poletown plant.

General Motors has officially unveiled the company's global 2012 Chevrolet Colorado in Thailand. The automaker says the truck is the culmination of a vehicle program that spanned five years, $2 billion and five continents. What did all that effort come up with? For starters, buyers in Thailand will be able to chose between a pair of new turbo-diesel four-cylinder Duramax engines. The engines are available in both 2.5-liter and 2.8-liter displacements, with the smaller lump producing 150 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
The larger, 2.8-liter turbo diesel yields 180 hp and a very impressive 346 lb-ft of torque. For reference, that's just 20 horsepower shy of the base 4.8-liter V8 in the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, but it's also 41 more lb-ft of torque. GM hasn't released any fuel economy estimates on either diesel engine, but both can be mated to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive versions of the Colorado make use of a two-speed, electronically actuated transfer case.
Will it come our way? GM isn't saying, but recent United Auto Workers deal-related news suggests that a mid-size truck like this one is being considered for the company's Wentzville plant near St. Louis. Chevrolet Air Intakes.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid has a price: $32,000. That's the just-announced MSRP for the base plug-in hybrid, with the top-of-the-line Prius Plug-in Hybrid Advanced jumping all the way up to $39,525. Because the both of these Prius Plug-in models have a 4.4-kWh, 176 pound battery pack, it should qualify for a federal tax credit of $2,500. Toyota has also announced that the larger Prius V, which does not qualify for any tax incentives, will start at $26,400. *All vehicles are subject to a $760 delivery fee.
Toyota says the plug-in Prius will be available in 14 western and East Coast states next spring and in all 50 states in 2013. The Japanese automaker is predicting 15,000 sales in the first full year and the Prius family could eventually be the company's best-selling nameplate once all members are on sale – presuming overall hybrid sales increase.
Recently, Toyota announced a partnership with Leviton to provide charging stations. Today, Toyota said that it will offer Leviton's 16 Amp, Level 2 charging station for $999 (including installation), starting in early October. Starting next month, Toyota will start taking reservations for the Prius Plug-in at its website next month.

Lexus may have debuted the 2012 GS 350 as part of last week's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance festivities in California, but the automaker isn't quite done with the rollout of its new rear-wheel-drive sedan. Seen here, Lexus has just released two teasers of two more models in the GS range: the sportier looking F Sport and hybrid-enhanced GS 450h.
Like the rest of Lexus' F-Sport treatments, we don't expect the GS F-Sport to be much more than a trim-and-tape job, though some suspension tuning may be in store for this model. It's been long rumored that Lexus is preparing an honest-to-goodness GS F performance model, so the F Sport trim ought to be similar to what the automaker offers on its smaller IS sedan.
The GS 450h will likely use the same 3.5-liter V6 and electric motor setup that's found in the current car, though some small massaging should hopefully improve fuel economy ever so slightly. We'll have the full details on both cars later this year.

The Sonic launches next month in GM's Orion Township plant as the smallest car assembled in the U.S.
It builds on the dubious legacy of GM's last UAW-built subcompacts, the disappointing Chevy Vega and the better Chevette of the 1970s and 1980s. Chevy's most recent subcompact, the Aveo, imported from Korea, screamed "econobox."
GM struggled to make money on those cars, which were often viewed as stripped-down, unattractive rides.
So when UAW and GM negotiators met ahead of the automaker's 2009 bankruptcy, as the union accepted frustrating concessions and GM fought to stay alive, the idea surfaced: Why not try to build a subcompact profitably in the U.S.?
Two years later, the UAW has agreed to cut labor costs by paying 40% of Orion's hourly workers half the standard $28-an-hour wage. GM gutted the factory to retool it for many of GM's most efficient processes.

Exactly what you expect to happen in a movie theater parking lot at premier of Fast Five. Books are made for reading, boots are made for walking and tires are meticulously engineered for burnouts. As you may or may not be aware, the latest chapter in the Fast and the Furious saga was released this weekend to the rejoicing of testosterone-soaked teenage crowds everywhere. Nowhere was Fast Five more celebrated than in Detroit, as after the final credits rolled, the movie-going masses retired to the parking lot for an impromptu burnout competition.
If you listen very, very closely, you can hear the cries of a million environmentalists.
Nearly everyone got in on the fun, from full-size diesel pickups to front-wheel-drive Chevrolet Malibu models and beater Nissan 240SX projects. Some of the more impressive smoke came courtesy of a Mitsubishi Evolution that retired to a far flung corner of the cinema parking lot to wring out some all-wheel-drive pirouettes. The fun seems to have lasted a good long time before the local PD showed up to put a stop to the party. Miraculously, very little sheetmetal was wrinkled in the smoke.

The 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition has already made its debut but apparently there are a host of other upgrades planned for the 2012 model year that will be applied to the rest of the Corvette range.
The information was revealed by a dealer source who spoke recently with Inside Line. The source revealed that both the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 supercar and Z06 will be receiving new performance packs for 2012, including a ‘High Performance’ package for the ZR1 and a new ‘Z07 Ultimate Performance’ package for the Z06.
The ZR1’s High Performance package is said to feature black cup-style aluminum wheels measuring 19-inches up front and 20-inches in the rear, as well as Michelin PS Cup tires and a six-speed manual transmission.
The Z06’s Z07 Ultimate Performance package, meanwhile, is said to get Performance Traction Management (previously a ZR1 exclusive), Michelin PS Cup tires, black cup-style aluminum wheels as well, Magnetic Selective Ride Control and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes.
Finally, expect to see a new ‘Technology’ package featuring a Bose premium sound system, a head-up-display, Bluetooth and USB connectivity and satellite navigation. Carlisle Blue Metallic is also being added to the Corvette’s color palette and the Corvette Convertible should also be available with a new blue soft-top roof.
It sounds like Chevrolet’s updates to the Corvette range should keep buyers happy until its successor, the C7, drops by sometime next year.

In addition to the usual raft of Corvettes and Camaros, General Motors will be bringing a pair of customized pickups to this year's SEMA show. The full range of heavy duty GM trucks were revamped for 2011, and thus, the Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD will be on display.

First up, the SEMA-bound Silverado 2500 HD Z71 features a Switchblade Silver exterior color wrapped with custom Z71 graphics. Other exterior upgrades include 20-inch wheels painted in Corvette Competition Gray, a body-color grille, hard-folding tonneau cover, hitch-mounted winch, amber roof lamps and six-inch oval assist steps also painted in that special Corvette gray. Inside the truck, GM has fitted dual DVD headrests, mobile wi-fi and a Chevrolet Accessory trim plate kit. The modified truck is powered by GM's new 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 and six-speed automatic transmission, which as we've found out in our testing, is one honey of a powertrain.
The second SEMA Silverado is a heavier-duty 3500 dually fitted for race car-hauling duty. After all, the Silverado 3500 is capable of towing up to 21,700 pounds, so one car on an open trailer is a piece of cake. The truck's exterior has been painted black with custom racing graphics and adds visual touches like chrome hood louvers, 17-inch bright wheels, a custom grille insert, chrome fuel door and trailering mirrors, among other things. The interior gets the same upgrades as the 2500 Z71, and a 6.6-liter Duramax is found under the hood of this beast, as well.

A LANCASHIRE police driving trainer whose colleague crashed into a pensioner's car killing him has told a court that he felt responsible.

Retired lecturer Peter Williams, 67, was driving his VW Touran with wife Jean on a country lane when a marked police Volvo T5 smashed into their vehicle at approximately 90mph. Car's Lights.

Mrs Williams survived but her husband, of Bolton-le-Sands, Lancashire, died 24 hours later on November 2 2006.

The car that collided with them was driven by PC Sean Schofield, 38, an advanced driver with Lancashire Police.

He was following trainer PC Andrew Massingham, 41, along the 60mph winding B6254 near Over Kellett, Lancashire, and hit 104mph moments before the crash, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

As Mr and Mrs Williams turned round a right bend PC Schofield's liveried car hit a road hump, left the ground and careered across the road into the pensioner's path.

PC Massingham - who is jointly charged with causing death by dangerous driving with PC Schofield - said he felt responsible.

He told the jury: "I was in charge of the course. I found out the following day that Mr Williams had died and it is a difficult burden to carry.

"As far as the effect it's had on my family and my life, I am sorry. It must be twentyfold what the Williamses are going through."

Asked by his barrister Jonathan Fuller QC if he had a message for the victim's family, he said: "I just wish I hadn't chosen that road on that day. I feel responsible for it." CAR'S LIGHTS.

The Mazdaspeed 3's 2.3-liter turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder engine pumps out 263 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. All that power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, the only transmission available. A limited-slip differential and an electronic torque limiter (which regulates the torque based on gear selection and steering position) are used to enhance traction and minimize torque steer.

Acceleration is exhilarating, with the 0-60 sprint taking just 5.9 seconds and a blast through the quarter-mile taking only 14.2 seconds. That turbocharged power takes a toll on fuel economy; the EPA estimates 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined.

Toyota Motor Corp., the nation's top automaker, saw worldwide production dive 15.5 per cent last month from a year earlier at 626,745 vehicles.

Toyota marked its on-year overseas production decrease in more than six years amid a slowdown in Europe and North America, while production in sluggish Japan also dropped on year, it said.

What is it?

We're not really sure how to describe the Q7 V12 TDI. A big part of us likes the fact that Audi has squeezed the sort of motor that could power a supertanker into the Q7, but there's another part that thinks Audi really should be doing more constructive things with its time. Audi UK reckons it'll only sell 40-50 Q7 V12 TDIs and we're pretty daft for our madcap SUVs - despite the media sponsored backlash. It's likely to go down well in the Arab states too, where silly power is the norm and fuel - whether it be petrol or diesel - is cheaper than water. With a price tag of £96,295 (yes, you read that correctly), the Q7 V12 TDI is one very expensive Audi.

Is it any good?

There's a moment when you first push the accelerator to the floor and the Q7 lunges forward that you can't help but want one. That's hardly surprising though; the Q7 V12 TDI is fast, as you might expect from something with a 493bhp, 738lb.ft, 6.0-litre V12 heart. Sixty-two mph arrives in just 5.5 seconds, which given the sheer scale and bulk of the Q7 is pretty extraordinary. What isn't is the racket that accompanies the ridiculous pace. The V12 TDI has been criticised in its racing installation as being too quiet, but that is certainly not an accusation that can be levelled at the unit here. Big powerful engines normally make big powerful noises and the V12 certainly makes a noise, just not one you'll enjoy. There's a boomy resonance that's more industrial generator engine than £100k flagship SUV.

You might forgive it that if the Q7 made up for its lack of aural appeal in other areas, but it doesn't. Push that accelerator and it rears up on its suspension: body control is poor. There's no feel from the weighty steering and for all of the mighty grunt of the engine it runs out of puff very quickly indeed. Audi does fantastic interiors, but for a few pounds short of £100,000 we'd like it to feel a bit more exclusive too.

Should I call the bank manager?

Calling the bank manager to ask for £100,000 to buy a SUV is likely to result in a muted response. Or laughter. The Q7 is insanely expensive, especially when compared to its 4.2-litre V8 TDI relative. Not only is that a much better car (which is only one second slower to 62mph), it is also half the price. Audi reckons that the Q7 V12 TDI's economy and emissions figures are worth mentioning, the Q7 able to return 25mpg on the official combined cycle and emitting 298g/km of CO2. That is admittedly impressive given the performance on offer, but it's hardly justification.

Summary

Audi is rightfully proud of its turbodiesel technology, but the Q7 V12 TDI isn't perhaps the best way to demonstrate it. Only a handful will ever be sold, which, with that gargantuan price tag, is hardly surprising. A 4.2-litre TDI Q7 is a far better proposition and would leave you enough change to have either an S5 or 3.0TDI quattro A8 with the change. But if you're earning £120,000 a week for kicking a ball or for crippling the banks by short-selling shares in the City then the price tag is incidental. The slowdown, if sustained, will begin to separate winners from losers among the 46 brands competing for market share.

Sales of cars, SUVs and minivans increased by only eight percent in April, compared to first quarter growth of 18 percent.

This month, car dealers in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen reported continued lackluster demand, according to results from a quarterly survey conducted by J.D. Power and Associates.

Two factors are damping consumer confidence, say the dealers.

First, the Shanghai stock market has skidded to the 3,300 level, from its peak of 6,000 in October 2007. In China, car buyers come from pools of the wealthy elite that make up less than 1 percent of the population. Their propensity to spend is somewhat linked to property and share prices.

Second, consumers believe that the government will soon release price controls on gasoline. State-owned oil companies, now subsidizing fuel prices, have been losing hundreds of million of dollars. Today, Chinese drivers pay $2.85 for a gallon of gas versus $4 in the U.S.

This month's earthquake in Sichuan Province is also expected to dent demand in the provincial capital of Chengdu, China's fourth largest city market.

It is true that April and May historically are seasonally weak months for China's auto market. But dealers report that the current lethargy in demand may last into summer.

Pressures of a slowing market are rarely distributed evenly. And China's market is no different.

Through April, Toyota's two joint ventures sales were up 44 percent in 2008. Honda achieved an increase of 37 percent. And market-leading Volkswagen, which is on track to sell more than 1 million cars in China this year, recorded a 29 percent rise. Ford was also up 29 percent, albeit from a much smaller base.

In contrast, other makes are under pressure. Nissan saw sales fall 3 percent through the first four months of the year. Peugeot/Citroen group sales were flat. And China's top automaker, Chery, achieved only a 5 percent increase.

GM, which reports that it is preparing to launch several new models, managed 8 percent growth through April.

A hike in gas prices in widely expected. When that happens, look for Chinese buyers to become more discerning.

Much like American customers, Chinese buyers will look for models that offer adequate size and better mileage. The five best-selling models in China this year are all powered by engines of less than 1.8 liters.

Smaller engines? Yes. Cheapest prices? Not necessarily.

Chinese consumers will give chase to better mileage. But this does not mean that they will also pursue small cars at the lowest prices.

Chinese brands like Geely and Chery dominate the under-$10,000 segment today. But their share of the market has slipped, while that of Japanese makes Toyota and Honda has continued to climb.

The engine line-up has been revised to provide better economy and emissions, Mercedes adding a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) version in Europe that it's boldly claiming as carbon neutral if driven on bio-gas. As there's very little infrastructure for CNG in the UK we'll not be getting it here. Instead we'll need to make do with the new BlueEfficiency models, a range of cleaner, greener models utilising technology like stop-start systems, low rolling resistance tyres and improved aerodynamics.

How does it drive?

The A150 BlueEfficiency is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and features a stop-start system. It's this that helps the A150 BlueEfficiency reduce its consumption and emissions over its regular relatives. Like rivals' stop-start systems the Mercedes version shuts down the engine when it would otherwise be idling when stationary at traffic lights and junctions. To activate it all you need to do is select neutral and the engine cuts out. A clever starter-generator linked to the camshafts via a drive belt helps the car instantaneously start when you depress the clutch and engage first gear. Mercedes makes bold claims that its system is quieter than its rivals', but really there's nothing in it.

The 95bhp engine isn't exactly a fireball, though it is plenty quick enough in town traffic and will keep up on the motorway too. But the natural environment for such a system is in the city, where it can improve economy by around 6.5%. That might not sound like a lot, but the A150 is already a pretty efficient machine in the first place. In every other respect it drives much like any other A-Class, which means it's not a hugely entertaining car, but a practical, spacious and well-built one.
